Modernization becomes child’s play
STOBER offers an all-in-one solution for controller- and drive-based applications with the CiA 402 device profil.
STOBER now offers its CiA 402 application with all operating modes defined in the standardized CiA 402 device profile. What’s new: Velocity mode is now integrated, bringing back an older operating mode. This provides the user with an all-in-one solution for both controller-based and classic drive-based applications. This complete solution is especially helpful for modernizing existing machines.
Pforzheim, Germany, 2023-11-07 – The internationally standardized device profile CiA 402 is suitable for both controller-based and drive-based applications. Using the included controller-based operating modes, users can implement applications with synchronized, cyclic set value specification by a motion controller. In addition, the drive controllers can also independently handle motion tasks, such as referencing during commissioning. The drive-based operating modes of CiA 402, on the other hand, offer complete movement calculation and design in the drive. In this setup, the set values for position, velocity and torque/force are converted into movements accurately and precisely.
“We have been using the device profile for our drive controllers for a long time,” says Lutz Augenstein, Management Center Electronics (MCE) at STOBER. “This simplifies our customers’ work and time-consuming programming is no longer necessary.” In the past, the CANopen device profile has adapted to the current requirements of the market. As a result, new operating modes were added over the years. Older ones are usually no longer required for modern machines, which is why many manufacturers of newer devices no longer implement them. Velocity mode, which allows the drive to be controlled using a set velocity, and Interpolated position mode, which is used to synchronize multiple axes, are two such modes. Augenstein says, “Without the aforementioned standardized operating modes, modernizing existing machines becomes a challenge for operators.”
For example, if a component is defective, users can only order components that support these operating modes. If they do not find what they are looking for, they have to switch to controllers with modern operating modes. This usually entails a huge amount of adjustments to the controller, which in turn requires experts with the necessary programming knowledge – as well as a great deal of time and high costs. Augenstein says, “That is why we have also integrated the older operating modes into the drive controller, which means we provide our customers with an all-in-one solution for controller-based as well as classic drive-based applications.”
Operators receive drive controllers from STOBER that are preconfigured for CiA 402. As a result, they only have to make minimal adjustments to their controllers. There is no need for complex programming. “This speeds up parameterization and gives them more flexibility when choosing new components,” the expert explains. Customers can specify all operating modes available from STOBER and all standardized parameters for the application via the controller – which means they can freely decide which ones they want to use.
